The literature concerning Metasequoia glyptostroboides is vast and well worth exploring. With the reopening of China to botanists in the late 1970s, new seed sources were available to bring in fresh genetic material.

The oldest Metasequoia in the country were all propagated from these seeds. In 1946, the Arnold Arboretum obtained seeds from China and distributed them throughout the country. Its rediscovery in a remote mountainous region of China in the early 1940s rocked the botanical world. The protest was forcibly suppressed by armed troops supported by tanks on 4 June, 1998. Reporters and Western diplomats there that day estimated that hundreds to thousands of protesters were killed in the Tiananmen Square Massacre, and as many as 10,000 were arrested.Larix decidua (European Larch) | Taxodium distichum (Baldcypress) | Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood)īack to Deciduous Conifer main page Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood)Īn ancient tree dating back over 65 million years that once covered much of North America, the Dawn Redwood was thought to be long extinct. Also it is not clear what happened to the seeds received by Dilworth in 1948, possibly some of the dawn redwood trees around the Peavy Forest Science Center are derived from these seeds.Ī smaller tree stands to the north of the large dawn redwood, it was planted on Jto memorialize those affected by the violent crackdown on protesting students in Tiananmen Square, Beijing ( Daily Barometer, June 20, 1991). Hard evidence as to the origin of all three trees is lacking. Some have conjectured that the two large dawn redwood trees in front of the Peavy Lodge in the Peavy Arboretum are also part of the gift from Chaney. It is often presumed that large dawn redwood in front (east) of Community Hall is one of the trees gifted to Dean Dunn in 1949. Martel, head of the department of landscape architecture, was charged with selecting a site suitable for the young trees. The seedling trees were about a foot tall and were derived from seeds Chaney planted in April 1948. It is reported in the Daily Barometer, April, 26, 1949, that Chaney gave three rare trees (called Dawn Sequoia in the article) to Paul Dunn, dean of the school of forestry, for planting on the Oregon State campus. Merrill, the Director of the Arboretum, for Merrill received such seeds from a Chinese scientist in January 1948 and quickly redistributed then to institutions and individuals in the U.S, including Chaney). (It is likely that the seeds from Arnold Arboretum were actually sent by Dr. Chaney, a paleobotanist at the University of California, during an expedition to China earlier in the year. The article further states that the seeds were collected by Dr. According to Dilworth the ancient trees would soon be growing in the Peavy arboretum north of Corvallis. Dilworth, assistant professor of forest management, recently received a packet of dawn redwood seeds from Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plains, Massachusetts.
